Manivasaga Siva Puranam

Praising the Lord by saying “Long live Namah Shivaya,” and pleading “Namah Shivaya, come to me! Scoop me up – gather me – embrace me” is what Manivasagam implies by the word “Vaa azhga” (embrace me)!
The Lord himself is the Nathan – the leader of all souls. That Lord’s Thaal (holy feet) – the ultimate truth – is our eyes. Our eyes themselves are the holy feet of our Lord God, long live that, says Manivasagam!
The Lord not leaving my Nenju (heart-thiruvadi) even for a moment – Nenju is the place where all five elements unite! That is, the place where all five elements harmonize! It exists right in our eyes. Stating that the eye itself is the heart is the essence of Manivasagam! Thus, long live the feet – the lotus feet – that constantly and forever shine as divine light within my heart, within my eyes, within the pupil!
Kokazhi – a large salt river. That is, what we would call an estuary, right? The place where a river meets the sea! Here, our very eye shines as a large estuary! Tears are salty, aren’t they! Ko means Lord – God! The Lord resides within, and nearby is the estuary! In front of the ocean-like Lord is the estuary, the place where the river mixes into the sea! The one who rules over it is the Guru! That itself is our gem, the pupil of our eye; that itself is the holy feet of the Lord, long live that, is the meaning of Manivasagam.
Aagamam ellaam (All Agamas) – All the Vedas, Agamas, Puranas, and Itihasas speak about the Lord, don’t they! The Lord is the one who stands as the very meaning of all Agamas! He is not somewhere far away! He is very close to us! In our bodies, in our eyes, he shines as the light alongside the pupil; that itself is the holy feet of the Lord! Long live! says Manivasagam!
“Ekan” — God is the One, the Supreme Absolute!
“Anekan” — Yet, He manifests as the many; dwelling as the life-force within every living creature across countless species (yoni bhedam).
Thus, the Almighty who is One, shines as the soul of every soul! The very place where He manifests within us is revered as His “Lotus Feet” (Thiruvadi). That sacred spot is our Eyes. The nectar-like verses of Manikkavasagar’s Thiruvasagam proclaim, “Long live those Holy Feet!” (Iraivanadi Vazhga).
“Vegang keduththaanda ventha nadivelga”
“Pirapparukkum pinjaganran peygazhalgal velga”
It is our mind that acts with excessive speed. If we surrender our mind at the holy feet of that Lord who is the King – the ruler of us all souls- He will control the speed of our mind, eventually bring it to stillness, and bestow His grace. Let those holy feet win over our mind.
“Pirapparukkum pinjaganran peygazhalgal velga”
What prevents us, who suffer from karma through countless births, from being born again and protects us are the holy feet of the Lord – the thiruvadi – which are indeed our very eyes! Do you know what it is like? It is tender – young – wouldn’t we refer to it like a baby? Our pupil is exactly like that. It is there that tears pour down like a waterfall when performing penance! Let that conquer. Let victory be achieved.
“Puraththaarkkuch cheyonran poongazhalgal velga”
To the one who has not attained the holy feet, to the ignorant, the Lord is at an unreachable distance to outsiders! But to those who have realized that the Lord’s holy feet are our very eyes, to those who have reached out and grasped the unreachable, the Lord is just like a child! His thiruvadi – holy feet – are indeed flower-like feet! Let that achieve victory.
“Karanguvivaar ulmagizhung kongazhalgal velga”
Worshipping with both hands folded is external reverence. In true wisdom (Mei-gnana), the two hands are the two eyes! What are feet to the Lord are hands to us, our two eyes! Focussing our two hands – our eyes – inward is the penance of wisdom! It is the Lord who joyfully grants supreme bliss to those who perform such penance – they are the holy feet of the God! Let that conquer!
“Siranguvivaar onguvikkum seeron kazhal velga”
Realizing that the Blissful Lord who gave us the asset – the eye – is present as the soul right in the center inside our head, for the one who systematically focuses their eyes inward, the Lord will make the divine light of the holy feet rise high as the light of the soul! Let those holy feet conquer.
”Eesanadi potri enthaiyadi potri”
The Lord (Eesan) possesses the nature of omnipresence. Praise the holy feet of the Lord who is omnipresent! He Himself is both father and mother to us all! Therefore, praise the holy feet of the Father – the Lord!
“Thesa nadipotri sivanse vadipotri”
He is the one who fills all lands – omnipresent – the entire universe – as light! His holy feet – our eyes – praise be! I praise them! He Himself is Sivan! He is the embodiment of light (Jyothi Swarupan); I praise His holy feet!
“Neyaththe ninra nimala nadipotri”
If we realize and place our affection – love – on our eyes, which are the holy feet of the Lord, our mind will become still! We are beings with the three impurities (mum-malam). The Lord is flawless, free from impurities (Nimalan)! I praise His holy feet.
“Maayap pirapparukkum manna nadipotri”
He is the King(of all souls) who removes the illusion of humans who sink into karma due to illusion (Maya), take birth, and suffer, and grants them the path of no rebirth. Our Lord’s holy feet, our eyes, are indeed worthy of praise!
“Seeraar perunthurainam theva nadipotri”
The excellent Lord who steadily(flawless) gave us divine light in our eyes resides in a grand place – the port (Thurai). That is right inside the center of our head! His holy feet – the divine feet are our very eyes, I praise those holy feet!
“Aaraatha inbam arulu malaipotri”
The Lord is the one who grants bliss, joy, supreme bliss, an unsatiating bliss. Isn’t it our eye that stands tall like a mountain? Saying the eye is a mountain is figurative language! Lord Shiva resides in Mount Kailash, doesn’t He! I praise that mountain, the Lord.
“Sivanavanen sinthaiyul ninra athanaal
Avanaru laale avanthaal vanangich”
Sivan – Because the Lord of light stood in my thoughts! Realizing and focusing the mind on our eyes, which are the holy feet of the Lord, one must perform penance focussing mind in the light! As the light shines brighter and brighter in our eyes, the grace of Sivan who is inside will be attained! Only then can we fully praise the one who shines in our eyes, which are His holy feet! Only by His grace can we bow to His holy feet and attain them! For that, it is essential for us to constantly remain in the thought of Sadashiva.
“Sinthai magizhach sivapuraa nanthannai
Munthai vinaimuzhuthu moya uraippaniyaan”
Because my thoughts are entirely focused on Sivan, His holy feet, and the eyes, I am joyful. Always blissful! The state, nature, existence, action, and manifestation of the Supreme Grace Light (Arutperunjothi) of that Sivan who grants me supreme bliss—I will constantly tell its stories! Because my entire mind is full of that, I will only speak of it! If doing this—singing the great fame of the Supreme Being and surrendering to Him—becomes my duty, then all my unresolved past karmas will be exhausted! They will cease!

How can I describe the greatness of the Lord—who shines as light inside my eyes—coming down to grant Nayana Deeksha, Satshu Deeksha, Thiruvadi Deeksha, and Gnana Deeksha out of His compassion by “showing His eye”! The supremely beautiful holy feet, which cannot be comprehended by thought and are beyond mind, speech, and body, have descended! Oh, the One who is the divine light that fills and shines everywhere in heaven and earth! Oh, the One who is immeasurable, boundless, expanding and spreading throughout the entire outer space, open space, and this universe! The great, rare wealth You have bestowed upon me—Your holy feet are my eyes! I, a humble devotee born of karma, struggle without words, unable to express Your glory!

Here, Manivasagar speaks of the evolutionary growth from a single-celled amoeba all the way to becoming a human! As a stone – grass – small plant – tree – worm – snake – various beasts – bird – ghost – ganas – mighty asuras – devas – human – sage; just like this, our births are countless!
According to each one’s karma, births are countless! Births will keep altering and occurring according to one’s karma! That is fate! By saying “thaavara sangamam” (unmoving and moving things), he refers to the states of birth from beings with one sense up to humans with six senses! Ignorant people who speak of science say that humans evolved from monkeys! True wisdom (Mei-gnanam) states that life starts with one sense, evolves into a six-sensed human, and thereafter, subsequent births occur according to one’s karma! That can manifest in any form based on karma! Having been born over and over into all these births and having suffered greatly, “Oh Lord, my God, at least now grant me the path of no rebirth and save me,” pleads Manivasagar!
Buddha says he realizes he was once a single-celled amoeba! What Manikkavasagar says is right! He did not say he was born from a monkey, like scientists say! Science changes day by day! The statements of the ignorant are subject to limitations! True wisdom is absolute! It is spoken by sages who first realized themselves and then realized God! Absolute, clear knowledge alone grants true wisdom!
Crores and crores of people in our nation of Bharath have attained this absolute wisdom – true wisdom!! Those who understood and awakened have escaped the cycle of birth! Those who haven’t are burning and suffering in their minds due to the effects of their karma! Oh human – first, do not live like an animal, a bird, or a ghost! Do not become a demon! Live according to the righteous path laid out by the sages; human, first live as a good human being! Perform penance! Donate wisdom(Gnana Thaanam)! You will become pure! The grace of the Lord will be perfectly attained! For all the people of the world, the mother and father is the one and only Lord! He is Divine Light! His abode is in the eye! “In this unmoving and moving universe” – The Lord stands in the ‘a’ (அ) within this unmoving and moving universe! He shines as light in the eyes, which are represented by ‘a’. ‘a’ (அ) means 8. The right eye is called Sivam – sunlight!

“Meiyye” – Truth – Eternity, the Lord is forever permanent! Oh Lord, your golden feet – my light having seen the harmonized in eyes, I attained liberation! This is the truth! The truth within my mei/body—the body—the light of the eye—is the Lord! Oh, the One who stands tall as the omkara Jyothi (light) blooming as the three flames of ‘A-kara’, ‘U-kara’, and ‘M-kara’ as Omkara within my heart so that I may be saved, attain liberation (mukthi), and gain supreme bliss! Oh, the One who shines brightly in the eyes that act as the heart! Oh Truth (Meiyyaa)—Oh Lord, you alone are the true one, the eternal one! Oh, Pure One (Vimalaa)—Vimalan is the one without impurities (malam)! The one who has the bull, the deity of Dharma, as His vehicle! Sivam is the red light seated upon the white light! The white light itself is referred to as the white bull. The four Vedas themselves praise and glorify You, Oh Lord, calling out ‘Aiyaa’ (Lord)! They speak of the path to reach You! How are You in this universe? When going deep—deep inside and far away through the path of the two eyes—You are the one who shines everywhere, radiating as a very, very subtle light! You are the Lord! The soul’s light (Atma Jyothi) that we see when we perform penance and go inward, are the atom-sized light particles of the Supreme Soul (Paramatma)!!”

Origin – God is the one without a beginning, measure, or end! You perform the five duties of creating, protecting, destroying, blessing, and concealing all the worlds! You will make me enter my eyes, which are Your holy feet. Isn’t it You! Your devotees who perform the penance of wisdom will attain a body that emanates a high, divine fragrance! You become like a child! As one gets closer and closer to the divine, a divine fragrance will emanate! They will also attain the heart of a child without deceit or guile! Oh embodiment of compassion who seeks out the devotees who seek You! When You shine within me, my karmic deeds will be removed! My mind will undergo a transformation! The mind that wanders externally will surrender to Hara’s feet internally and become peaceful! As time goes on, the mind will dissolve, and as karmas are exhausted, it will completely cease to exist! Oh Lord, You stand hidden within me! You shine and radiate brightly right in the middle of my head!

Where is God? Can you get ghee straight from freshly drawn milk? Is it clearly visible? The Lord exists like ghee within milk! If we want ghee, we must boil the drawn milk, let it cool, add culture to curdle it into yogurt, and churn it repeatedly with a churner until butter forms. Then, if we place that butter in a pan on the stove and melt it, we get ghee! Look at the effort we take to get ghee from milk! Just like the sweet taste of milk mixed with rock candy and ghee, if great devotees fix Shiva in their thoughts and perform penance, they will attain the grace of Sivan! Through the initiation of wisdom (Gnana Deeksha) in our pupils, if we gain awareness and remain steadfast in the awareness of the pupil’s light, as we continually perform penance, our mind is churned like churning yogurt. As karmas disperse more and more, we can see the inner light, the soul’s light (Atma Jyothi), the Lord!
If one wants ghee, a little effort must be made. One must wait patiently. Similarly, to see and realize God, we must perform penance! We must wait patiently. If rushed, the task will not succeed! If we do penance in this manner and continuously keep doing it, all our karmas—namely Prarabdha, Sanchita, and Agami—will gradually be eliminated. When they are completely exhausted, the great life without rebirth and supreme bliss will be attained! Who will give this? The Lord who resides within us! The Devas too the peerless Lord who is praised! He possesses five colors. The Lord of the five elements, each of the five elements has a color! Everything is a combination of the five elements! Earth, water, fire, air, and space—He is all of these! He is the one who manifests as a combination of them all! He is within everything! He is the Lord! ‘Na’ – green, ‘Ma’ – orange, ‘Si’ – red, ‘Va’ – blue, ‘Ya’ – purple. Thus, the Lord is the one possessing these five colors! The Lord who exists throughout the universe as the five elements is hidden right inside the center of our head within our body! The Lord is not hidden!? It is the karmas we have committed that obscure the Lord so we cannot see Him! If we perform the penance of wisdom and remove the veils of karma, the Lord within will manifest! We can see Him! We can realize Him! We can attain supreme bliss!”

Due to the cruel karmas accumulated over countless births, the illusionary darkness has covered and hidden my ability to see the Lord, who is my life source! My body came into being due to karmas called sin and merit—virtue and sin. It is my own karma! The karma done by someone else will not affect me! The human body is bound by the rare rope of karma, covered with skin on the outside, filled with worms and dirt throughout, and is a hut with nine openings that ooze out waste and water! The five senses within this, acting according to karma with a confused mind, will blink blindly without understanding anything!? Deceiving the human through the path of karma, it takes an already ruined person, ruins them further, and degrades them to an animalistic state, making them a demon or one blinded by lust! Being such a sinful soul, how will I attain Your grace?! Nevertheless, Oh Lord, Oh One without impurities (malam), for me to reach You, I too must change my three impurities (mum-malam)! Oh Pure One (Vimalaa) you have bestowed Your grace upon me, who does not even know how to perform penance by realizing with love, blending, melting, and increasing the inner light within the light of my pupil where You reside! Oh Lord, who graced this lowly one by teaching this act of penance through the initiation of wisdom (Gnana Deeksha)! Oh Ocean of Compassion who came to Thirupperunthurai to bless me! Oh One who graced me by showing Your long holy feet! Oh generous Lord of Grace, who has a kindness greater than a mother’s, who stopped and took dominion over this devotee who is worse than a dog! Oh Lord of Truth! Your compassion is true compassion!”

That which is called attachment (paasam) is the great weapon that pushes us into karma! Attachment is treacherous! Instead of getting caught in attachment within worldly illusion, You severed worldly desires and made me place my love upon You, Oh Lord! Oh Protector who blesses by showering love and placing affection upon You! Oh Lord, the Light who is hidden in the hearts of those who do not think of You! Penance of Wisdom—When performing penance by realizing the light in the pupil of the eye, tears will overflow and run like a river! When it is said the heart melts, the eyes melt and tears flow! As the tears kept overflowing and running, the Lord stood permanently as my precious life! How can the Lord be affected or harmed by pleasure and pain! Because He is within me, nothing affects Him! A lover to those who love Him! The Lord is a devotee to His devotees! He is everything and He is nothing! Oh luminous One! With sharp intellect and true wisdom, through penance, they will realize You, Oh Lord! Such great sages will keep their focus on the pupil of the eye—on the light itself—stay awake and observe, they will see! To those who observe thus, the object being observed, the true substance, the object of observation is the pupil of the eye, Oh Lord! Oh Lord who is the light shining inside a very, very subtle—small hole the size of a needlepoint right in the center of the pupil in the eye! Thinking of that small light and placing one’s focus on it, the subtle realization attained there is indeed the realization of God! Get initiated to attain that realization! Through a true Guru of wisdom (Gnana Sadguru) and the initiation of wisdom (Gnana Deeksha), everyone can attain that subtle realization! Then, by continuously doing penance without giving up, as the realization deepens and the light grows, supreme bliss can be attained!
For that Lord, there is no departure! No arrival! And no union! He is a uniquely holy embodiment! He Himself—Shiva—my Father—the Great Light—stays within me and forever protects and graces me! Those afflicted by karma cannot see Him! Only those who resolve their karma, those who perform penance for that purpose, will see that Great Light, the Supreme Light of Grace (Arutperunjothi)!

Oh You who exist as a subtle realization that cannot be explained in words! Oh You who manifest as the different appearances and respective intellects of this ever-changing world! No matter how many changes occur, Oh unchanging, clear, permanent, pure one (Nimalan)! Oh Lord, You are the clarity of clarity! Oh nectar welling up in my thoughts like a spring, unconsumed by anyone else! The Lord graces only me to drink the nectar that springs within me! Oh You who possess me! Oh Lord who is inside, wearing me as a garment!

We, who wander with deformed minds, poisonous thoughts, and traits due to the effects of our karma, are imprisoned in this body! “Oh Lord, I cannot bear it anymore! Oh Master, Oh God, protect and bless me!” Thus praising and glorifying, receiving the initiation of wisdom (Gnana Deeksha) from a proper guru of wisdom, doing penance, transforming the false body made of karma, seeing the truth within the truth, and uniting with the true light of wisdom to rejoice—such a person will be saved! He alone is a true devotee! A true devotee is one who has seen and realized the true entity—the light of the soul (Atma Jyothi), the Supreme Light (Paranjyothi)—within his own truth/body through the light of the pupil! The Almighty Lord Himself will redeem such true devotees from karma, bestow grace, and protect them by adding them to His holy feet so that no more births occur due to karma! God is one! Only by His grace can we transform and destroy our deceitful senses and karma, this foul-smelling body of nine holes made of blood, bone, flesh, and marrow, into a pure body of light! He who shines as a small light in the pupil of our eye – His holy feet by holding onto it, performing penance, making it into a great light, multiplying the light of our soul, and making that light pierce through from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet, we can transform this physical body of flesh into a body of light! This itself is perfect wisdom! The Lord is the one capable of giving this! He is dancing within the dark pupil of our eye! See and absorb Him! Once the light is seen, where is the darkness!

The Sivam that dances in Thillai – is dancing as light within the pupil of the eye at the boundary of our face! Below the head… the head is the North, and below that is the South, meaning right in the middle of our head, that itself is meant by the Southern Pandya country (Thenpaandi Naadu)! Oh You who severs the disease of birth that traps us in suffering and protects us! Oh Lord! In a way that makes one think, ‘Wonderful! Amazing!’, that Lord who is beyond the reach of mind, speech, and body, whom no one can comprehend! By receiving the teachings and the initiation of wisdom (Gnana Deeksha) through a true Guru of wisdom (Gnana Sadguru), [one understands that] the eye itself is the holy feet of the Lord! If one surrenders there, he alone will receive the grace of the Lord! Those who perform penance from the holy feet, who realize and recite the true meaning of this song sung by Manivasagar, those who perform penance, Sivapuram – Sivam is light, Puram is place – those who realize this from within the eye and perform penance will reach the place inside where the soul’s light (Atma Jyothi), which is Sivam, resides! There they will reach the lotus feet of Sivan! They will attain liberation (Mukthi)! Praised by all, they will reach the feet of the Lord!”
“Those who receive the teachings of wisdom and the initiation of wisdom from a true Guru of wisdom, and remain awake performing penance in the eyes which are Sivapuram, will attain wisdom that is praised by the world and will reach the holy feet of the Lord.”
