Thanga Jothi

Gnana Sabai

The Thanga Jothi Gnana Sabai (Trust), under the guidance of Aanmeega semmal gnana sarguru siva selvaraj ayya, began spreading the sacred knowledge of Thiruvadi to the world. Following the Thirukkailaiya Paramparai of Thirumoolar Nayanar, the enlightened saint Jothi Ramasamy Desikar placed Aanmeega semmal gnana sarguru siva selvaraj ayya on the Guru Peedam (Seat of Spiritual Authority). In our Sabai, both Thiruvadi Upadesam (Teachings) and Thiruvadi Diksha (Initiation) are imparted by the blessings of Vallalar and Aanmeega semmal gnana sarguru siva selvaraj ayya. The Sabai celebrates Vallalar’s Avatar Day on Purattasi Chithirai and Thaipoosam Gnana Dhaanam with devotion and community service.

Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar – His Life and Teachings

Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar – His Life and Teachings

Vallalar (Chidambaram Ramalingam) was born in 1823 at Marudur, near Chidambaram, in a devout family. From childhood, he was deeply drawn to spirituality. At the age of nine, he delivered his first discourse at the Chidambaram temple, astonishing the scholars gathered there. Later, his work Thiru Arutpa — a collection of more than 6,000 hymns — became a treasure of divine wisdom.

Vallalar emphasized Compassion, Divine Light Meditation, Simplicity, and Universal Love as the foundations of spiritual life. The Sathya Dharma Salai (Hall of True Charity) and the Sathya Gnana Sabha (Hall of True Wisdom) stand today as symbols of his vision. At the Dharma Salai, food (annadhanam) was provided to everyone without discrimination, and the Gnana Sabha was dedicated to the realization of the Divine Light.

Until age 51, Vallalar maintained strict discipline in food, lifestyle, and compassion toward all living beings. In 1874, he entered the Gnana Sabha and merged with the Divine Light. His teachings focus on compassion as the highest virtue, a pure vegetarian lifestyle, truthfulness, simple living, and universal brotherhood. Vallalar’s philosophy continues to inspire millions seeking a life of purity, service, and spiritual clarity.

Anmeega Semmal Gnana Sarguru Siva Selvaraj Ayya – The Torchbearer of Vallalar’s Wisdom

Anmeega Semmal Gnana Sarguru Siva Selvaraj Ayya is celebrated as a guiding force who carries forward Vallalar’s teachings. Through his spiritual discourses and Thiruvadi Gnana Pugazhchi, he has helped thousands understand the deeper essence of Vallalar’s philosophy. His initial inspiration came through Kannmani Maalai, a work that awakened his spiritual pursuit.

Ayya travels constantly, spreading messages rooted in Vallalar’s teachings. With more than 35 years of spiritual service, he continues to uplift people through meditation, vegetarian discipline, simple living, and selfless love. His Thiruvadi Dhavam has transformed the lives of countless devotees worldwide.

Through his guidance, many have embraced compassion, avoided violence of any form, and committed themselves to a life of purity and divine awareness. Ayya reinforces that walking the path of Vallalar brings spiritual realization, peace, and the light of true knowledge into one’s life.

Open Your Eyes

and Simply Be (Do Nothing)

God’s Thiruvadi (Divine Feet) is in our eyes! The Kanmani (pupil of eyes) (divine light in the eyes) is where the mind emerges. Spiritual accomplishment lies in restraining the wandering mind and keeping it within this divine seat. The place where the mind rests is where it otherwise disperses. This is the essence of Thiruvadi Dhavam (spiritual practice at the eyes).

Thiruvadi – Divine Feet in the Eyes

The Thiruvadi of God resides in our eyes. The very light of our soul, which radiates from the center of our head, shines through our eyes. Our eyes are the place in the body where the divine light from the Atma (soul) is directly manifested. It is also the seat from which the mind expresses itself. Saints and sages meditate at this seat to attain liberation and to unite with God.

The divine energy of God in our eyes is symbolically described as the Sun – Moon, Ah – Uh, Shivam – Shakti, Sangu – Chakkaram, Puruvamathi, Heart (Iru Udhayam). The life-light shining through these divine eyes is further referred to as Kannan, Kannamma, Krishnamani, Alilai, Narayanan, and Sinmayam, representing the divine consciousness manifesting in the eyes.

Thiruvadi Teachings (Upadesam)

The Thiruvadi Upadesam given by the Sanmargha Satya Sangha explains clearly and decisively the divine state of God and our own inner state. By understanding and accepting this teaching firmly, one follows the pure Sanmargha path, which is the supreme and unmatched path of knowledge in the world. Only the disciple carefully chosen by the Guru can truly receive guidance. One attains wisdom only by serving a true Guru and receiving Diksha (initiation).

Through the teachings of Thiruvadi Upadesam, the disciple learns: Who is God? Who am I? Where does the soul reside? How can one perceive it? What obstructs the vision of the divine? How to remain still? How to restrain the mind at the seat of the eyes? Understanding these principles is the essence of Upadesam, followed by Diksha.

Thiruvadi Diksha (Initiation through the Eyes)

Thiruvadi Diksha (Initiation through the Eyes)

Diksha = Dee + Aksha (Light in the Eyes).
This means that the Guru awakens the divine light (Dee) in the disciple’s eyes (Aksha). Through this initiation, the disciple becomes a child of Vallalar from the very moment of Diksha. The disciple gains perception through the Kanmani (pupil of eyes)—the divine light in the eyes.

The Guru awakens the disciple’s inner eye-light with his own divine eye-light. Only then can the disciple perform Dhavam (spiritual practice) to further strengthen and expand the eye-light. Only a disciple who was seated on guru Peeda by a sage can confer this sacred Diksha. The variations known as Sachu Diksha, Nayana Diksha, or Dasa Diksha all refer to this Thiruvadi Diksha.

Diksha leads the disciple to the  Gnana Sathana (state of wisdom). The initiated disciple becomes a Dwija, a spiritually reborn soul. In other words, the disciple experiences a spiritual rebirth. This concept is echoed in the Bible: “Unless one is born again, he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven”, and Agathiyar Maharishi also states: “There is no other way to be reborn except through spiritual awakening.”

Thiruvadi Davam (Spiritual Practice at the Eyes)

Thiruvadi Davam (Spiritual Practice at the Eyes)

Thiruvadi Dhavam is not chanting mantras, performing rituals, or practicing external yoga. It is not even pranayama or other yogic practices alone. Dhavam is the practice of focusing the mind and consciousness on the Thiruvadi—the divine seat of the eyes—after receiving Diksha from the Guru. The practitioner awakens the divine light within the Kanmani (pupil of eyes) and strengthens perception while keeping the eyes open during Dhavam. This practice revives the dormant soul-light that may have been obscured by karma. By doing so, the mind and prana (vital energy) are harmonized, and the aspirant attains spiritual accomplishment.

Vallalar emphasizes this practice in the Gnana Sariya: “Think, reflect, and experience repeatedly.” This is the process of awakening the inner fire. During Thiruvadi Davam, both the mind and prana withdraw from worldly distractions. The divine light of God in our eyes is the reason the practice is called “Simply Be (Do Nothing)”. A human, born of parents, becomes spiritually reborn by the Guru through Dhavam, and ultimately attains God-realization.

Satsangam (Spiritual Congregation)

Satsangam (Spiritual Congregation)

Gathering together to perform spiritual practices is Satsangam, whereas reflecting alone is called Sadvicharam. True wisdom is accessible to everyone, but spiritual gatherings accelerate the process. According to Adi Shankaracharya, Satsangam leads to Nir-Sangam (non-attachment), Nir-Sangam leads to Nir-Mugam (absence of ego), Nir-Mugam leads to Nir-Mala (purity), and Nir-Mala leads to Jivan Mukti (liberation in life). Vallalar confirmed the same. Spiritual gatherings among virtuous people are essential, and no amount of solitary Dhavam can replace the importance of Satsangam.
