Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar – Life and Teachings

Vallalar (Chidambaram Ramalingam) was born on October 5, 1823, in Marudhur under the Chithirai star of the Purattasi month. From a young age, he had deep devotion to God. At the age of 9, he began composing spiritual hymns in Chennai at Kandha Kottam and later authored over 6,000 divine songs in the book Thiru Arutpa in Vadalur. The Supreme Lord is one, called as ArutperunJothi.

He established Sathya Dharma Salai to feed the hungry and Sathya Gnana Sabai to share spiritual enlightenment. The Sabai was structured with small and large assemblies (Thiruvadi) representing human karma, illusion, and ego through seven tiers. Every individual was encouraged to receive Atma Jothi Darshan, experience spiritual bliss, and receive initiation from a Gnana Satguru.

At the age of 51, Vallalar transformed his physical body into a radiant form and merged with the divine on Thaipusam, 1874. His core teachings included: feeding the hungry, experiencing compassion through spiritual service, following a pure vegetarian diet, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, refraining from killing animals in God’s name, and avoiding idol worship.

The discipline of compassion (Jeeva Karunya Olukkam) is not limited to physical charity. While universal empathy is essential, one must also cultivate compassion for their own inner self. It is through this inward grace—recognizing the soul’s sanctity—that one achieves Mukthi and the supreme bliss of immortality.

Guided by the Universal Guru Vallalar, we are called to realize the soul and attain the Supreme Effulgence through penance. He showed the way through his own divine sight, teaching us the sacred discipline of constant wakefulness. To follow his path is to keep the eyes open, ever-watchful for the light of Grace.

Spiritual Sage Gnana Sarguru Siva Selvaraj Ayya – Sharing Thiruvadi Wisdom

Gnana Sarguru Siva Selvaraj Ayya, a disciple of Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar, revealed the secrets of Thiruvadi for humanity. He authored 35 spiritual books in Tamil, with Kanmani Maalai being the first, making divine wisdom accessible to ordinary people.

Guru Ayya also wrote commentaries on Thiru Arutpa, Thirumandiram, Thiruvasagam, and 4000 Divya Prabandham. Some of his works have been translated into English by his disciples. He lived a simple life with his wife, Thangam Amma, and son, Suyam Jothi, dedicating his life to spreading Thiruvadi wisdom. Through him, over 3,000 devotees received Thiruvadi initiation.

WIth grace of all enlightened siddhars and vallalar, ayya before attaining Mahasamadhi, installed nine disciples on the Guru peeta. Through Vallalar and Ayya’s grace, Thiruvadi initiation continues today via these nine Gurus of thanga jothi gnana sabai.

Guru Ayya emphasized the importance of Gnana Daanam (sharing knowledge), seeking devoted followers to guide, and spreading spiritual wisdom through jeeva samadhi and Gurupooja events.

Thangajothi Gnana Sabai – Sharing Thiruvadi Wisdom

The Thangajothi Gnana Sabai (Trust) was established by Gnana Sarguru Siva Selvaraj Ayya to bring Thiruvadi wisdom to the world. Following the Thirukkailai lineage and guided by Siddhar Jothi Ramasamy Desikar, Ayya was installed on the Guru seat.

Our Sabai continues to provide Thiruvadi teachings and initiations through the blessings of Vallalar and Ayya. We celebrate Vallalar’s birth on Purattasi Chithirai and Gnana Daanam on Thaipusam.

The Guru’s disciples actively participate in Gurupooja events across Tamil Nadu, conducting Thiruvadi austerities, sharing free books, and enlightening devotees. Before his Mahasamadhi,Siva Selvaraj Ayya installed nine disciples on the Guru seat, who are now carrying forward his legacy and spreading his teachings. The Sabai’s sole purpose is to bring Thiruvadi wisdom to all, regardless of caste or religion. Only followers of pure Saiva vegetarianism, who avoid tobacco and alcohol, are eligible for initiation.

The Guru’s primary guidance emphasizes Gnana Dhavam (spiritual discipline), Gnana Dhanam (sharing knowledge), and Satsang. This spiritual revolution is presented in a way that even ordinary people can understand through Ayya’s 35 simple books. The Guru made his works freely available in libraries across Tamil Nadu. There is no need to renounce home life; one can practice Thiruvadi austerities while fulfilling daily responsibilities.

Sanatana Dharma, the eternal path, teaches how to attain immortality. It is the common life path for all 7 billion people in the world. Without any discrimination, all beings are children of the Supreme — this is the essence of Sanatana Dharma. The true path, followed since Vedic times, has been revealed openly by Siva Selvaraj Ayya.

Our Sabai offers Thiruvadi teachings and initiations under the spiritual guidance of Vallalar and Ayya. Key observances include Vallalar’s birthday (Purattasi Chithirai) and Gnana Daanam (Thaipusam). We also conduct regular Satsangs to facilitate group meditation and collective spiritual practice.
